If you're using windows, you'll find the setting you need under: Start->control panel->regional
and language options->languages->install files for east asian languages.

You'll need a copy of the Windows XP install CD for this.

Can anyone tell me from a impartial perspective if there is any really use in modern day society
for this practice? I would think if there was western medicine would have something to say about
it...

I understand the practice and after reading this have a relatively good idea as too what is being
done by Chinese now but still feel that much of it is blown out of proportion.

Obviously a lot of rest is needed and there is a recovery period but what is that recovery period
like in terms of length? Is it to the pint now where this is merely cultural and not at all
necessary (in the Chinese practice- not resting and recovering)?

Any views would be appreciated...

P.S. I'm not a woman so I won't be able to understand from a personal perspective some of the
things that will be mentioned.

I think most western doctors don’t understand that there are great differences between western
people’s constitution and Chinese people’s. (This is the key point here. If you can’t
understand this, you can’t understand why Chinese women need to 坐月子.)

The one month period is because the lochia (恶露) usually stops after a month.

and the clinical experience gained in Chinese people’s life for thousands of years.

people and Western people? I'm sure our ABC members will be eager to hear . . .

hehe to westerners isn't it just called maternity leave.... whether or not it is a month will just
depend on your company and~I would figure they wouldn't want you hanging around right after having
a kid to lower their liabity if something happened to you...plus your productivity afterwards must
be low with all that required milking or something...

people in one place differ from those in other place.

shower, she can still use a hot towel to clean her body.

Umm I think this is called immunity... It's not about constitution as you are referring to
constitution, it's about the fact that this is what they drank from the time they were a child and
have build up very natural immunities towards it.

Okay, I'm following along .... um hum, conditions with differences, Chinese/US,
rural/cities...hmmm...woman, baby after tired/weak. Wait a minute where is there a difference? Ok
continuing no a/c poor farmer, or is that poor farmer no a/c poor sanitation= cold/infection
easily. Okay so let me ask then a lady just having a baby is always prone to infection and poor
sanitation could make it easier yes but a freaking cold! Come on man live in the 21st century! And
you must obviously be thinking winter. Okay one or two seasons out of the year where an A/C would
help but not with a cold! We don't get colds just because we are cold (despite what our ancestors
think).

I'm not saying that what you have said has no logic. I can understand this reasoning for the
poorer areas of China but in your explanation you have left out the cities! What about the
differences between Chinese Cities and US Cities????? They do not have the same conditions you
pointed out that exist in rural areas... Not to mention that in the countryside it is very likely
birth through a mid-wife versus in a hospital. Can you tell with all those factors why this is
still a necessary practice? And don't say constitutions are different... Everyone's constitutions
are different and I know many Chinese that have a lot better constitutions than many Westerner's.

If I recall correctly, 82% of Chinese babies are delivered in hospitals.

Personally, I think it is very important to take a long rest. And to use A LOT of disposable
products.

As far as I have been told by my Chinese friends the practice is pretty standard everywhere and
not very many differences exist between rural and city.

And that number is pretty decent so it just furthers my idea that this is now just something that
is done that does not really have a basis as no one has been able to yet explain to me WHY it is
done.

I really don’t know how to describe it to you. In traditional Chinese medicine, one’s
constitutions are described as虚, 实, 寒, 热, 湿, 躁, etc. Do you have any friend knows
traditional Chinese medicine? I still wonder how to explain academic terms like 阴虚火旺,
寒体,化湿解表 in TCM to you. I think the meaning of the word 体质 in TCM is not identical
with its English counterpart “constitution”.

I think the word “constitution”is associated with health. How can I make it clear to you that
different people have different 体质? OK, I show you another example. Even in the same health
condition, and wounded in the same level, scars appear on black, yellow people much more possibly
than on white people. That’s because of the effect of color element, color people are usually
cicatricail diathesis瘢痕体质. Do you have some idea on why Chinese women need to 坐月子?

weird." I don't mind having an unusual name. My english name is unusual too, but most people like
it.

Yes, I agree with Li Yuzuo. “柏凯" has a good meaning. “柏” means tall and straight like
a tree, and “凯”means generous. "包" as the last name conjured up the image of a good and
fair judge who upholds righteousness. It's just too bad that "包柏" sounded like boba in the
boba tea, so your name became generous boba. I thought it could be a great way to approach girls
if you don't mind they laugh at your name first. I was told that if you laugh at yourself first,
the others will stop laughing at you. Some girls may think you have a good sense of humor and like
to be your friend.

Could it be that the words we learn to mispronounce in the earliest period of study become the
ones that are the most difficult for us to hear the errors in later on?

and it seems to me that you can speak most sounds now, except "入聲字" (short sound word) . In
the sentence like "吃不到的葡萄是酸的" , you made mistakes in many "short sound words"
and i had to listen third time to understand what you actually meant when you said "hit but to
sik".

My problem was that I tried to be a hero and learned to speak before learning to listen clearly.
Another issue is that my wife and family have already fully adapted to my accent and pronunciation
and never correct me anymore. They simply understand what I'm saying first time and to improve, I
need to talk to different people. My family are only useful in terms of fluency, even vocabulary
is becoming restricted now. So I've been trying to jump out of my comfort zone and meet new
people, but its hard at first as they require time to get used to my accent or sometimes need to
repeat a few times before they understand 100%.

It really takes a lot of patience to correct every mistakes and in my experience of learning
Vietnamese, unless I kept making a new friend every hour, most people lost their patience to
correct my mistakes in 5-30 mins. But i think you've passed the most difficult obstacles in
pronunciation (good to hear that you made 'ng' sound very well) and all you need is just big
effort to memorize so many sounds and tones.

If chinese characters is no problem for you, try to listen to RTHK news report, read their
transcript (not a complete one) and repeat sound exactly like them. Hmm, just a pimsleur's way to
learn language.

Literally translated, it means the most common, nothing is more common than.... but actually, it
means very very common (not necessarily most common)
And also we are more inclined to say 再普通不过了 not 再普通也不过.
For example: 你这办法再普通不过了, your idea is very very common (nothing particular).

再..adjective...不过了, is a phrase, you can say 再好不过了(very very good)

But it seems that it’s limited used, only used with 简单，平常，普通…

Not all the adjectives can be used with it.

再美也不过是精装垃圾＝再美，也不过是精装垃圾, means even though it’s so
beautiful, it’s just a garbage with a beautiful casing

New here, hi all. I've racked my brain trying to do this translation, and it all is too awkward to
me to translate, why I don't know. If you could help with a couple sentences, I'd appreciate. I'll
show you the non-sense I've come up with...

Committee and Taiwan Affairs Office of State Council on 15 May. The statement "The Chinese people
are not afraid of ghosts, nor will they be intimidated by brutal force" showed clearly the dilemma
faced by Beijing at that time.

I think the buttons under the temperature control (in left-right left-right order) are

Sleep

If that doesn't work I'm sure someone else can help more.

Press the 模式 (mode) button until the display arrow points to 制冷 (cool). Then use the arrow
button to adjust to the desired temperature.

Are the names Edison, Samuel, Jade, Tiffany?

The Chinese names you quoted are tranliteration. Sometimes we would use more beautiful /
meaningful characters to make them more beautiful / meaningful. I think the characters used in
your case are ok, although some people might find the last character in the first name, i.e. 孙,
a bit odd in a name. The character itself is a surname, but it means grandson, and if someone who
is not your grandparent calls you grandson it could be an insult. But I am probably thinking too
much.

佳德 has a very good meaning -> good virtue

The Jeweller Tiffany calls itself 蒂芙尼 in Chinese.

although names are translated by pronunciation, but for some of the names there are fixed
translations.
I think Samuel is often translated as 山姆, for it's simpler, and "山" is used more often than
"萨"
Tiffany is always translated as "蒂凡尼" , be cause of the famous movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
however, I think "佳德" is a very good translation, cause it has both similar pronunciation and
good meaning.

Couple of questions: Does anyone know if the list at
http://csc.edu.cn:8080/en/readarticl...?articleid=405 are the only institutions that will take CSC
scholarship students, or will any University that can accept foreign students do? The difference
is that that list has 1 University in Qingdao, while there are several others not on the list.
It'd be nice to have several options in the same city...

you have to choose schools on the list, as theyre the only ones with partnerships with the csc
program. if you list other schools in your top three, you just wont get the scholarship.

How annoying. Oh well. Thanks for the information. Now to look up information on the University
I'd prefer. And to wait for details of the scholarship to emerge. It also seems like there'd be a
lot more people applying in New Zealand, so I figure my chances of getting a scholarship are
pretty minimal. Worth trying for anyway though.

I finally received an email from somebody at the Chinese Embassy in Singapore letting me know that
they have received my scholarship application. They are going to forward it to China at the end of
May, so I'm assuming that the scholarship deadline for Singapore is May rather than April. If any
Singaporean would like this information, they can PM me, and I'll be happy to share this contact
info with them.

^^ Anyway, I'm quite excited that my scholarship application did go through, and that it did not
get lost in the post!

1. I really don't understand who's the one responsible for admitting me to the university I chose
(or they've chosen for me). What are the chances of getting what I asked for
(Fudan/Zhejiang/Chengdu)
2. If and when I get the scholarship, as I understand, I get free dorms. Can anyone say what kind
of dorms (I mean- is it the cheapest kind possible? Can it be upgraded for a little extra?) (let's
say I get what I asked for and have been accepted to Fudan....)
3. Money issues- as a scholarship receiving student- can I work in anything except for teaching
English? How much will I get from the Chinese, and when? Is it enough to cover anything?
4. Anyone else chose Fudan/Zhejiang/Chengdu? See ya there (hopefully)

csc is responsible for admitting you to the university. i think the question should be rephrased
as: What are the chances of getting the scholarship? (the focus is on the scholarship, not really
the school. the school is pretty automatic.) But we dont really know anything else.

as stated on the intro page, we dont really know much of the inner workings and the chances of
getting the scholarship, whether its one or two years, full or partial, or even what goes on with
how they manage the schools and applicants' choices.

this is answered in the intro page. it is the cheapest options for FOREIGNERS. from what i
remember four years ago, fudan's international dorms are not bad. there's only the option of
double or single, and you'll just get the double. (my knowledge on this is outdated, and this isnt
the forum to discuss fudan's options anyway) the upgrade is different for every school, but you
should be able to switch up as long as you pay the difference.

i originally thought it was 干么，short for 干什么, but the 干吗 would be do
what/something, as in 你明天打算干吗？

confusion came from hearing local peoples saying:

干嘛? what'cha doin'? what's up?

干麻?!!! what the hell are you doing?

i suppose 干吗 and 干嘛 are approximately the same.

(of course this is just my interpretation. could be wrong....)

Before coming to China, I bought books, CDs, etc. I learned that 10 was shí.
-But, my friends mom - born and raised in Taiwan - kept saying sí...
-And, most of the Chinese in my town (SF) spoke Cantonese. (yat, yi, sam...)

-And then I came to Beijing, where the taxi drivers refer to Chao Yang Gong YuanR Xi MenR.
-And the people at the copy store ask me if I want 10 fenR copies.
-And my co-worker who jokingly says "Mei menR" if I ask her anything at all
-And the lady who I give empty soda bottles to, who has no teeth, and speaks so fast, and in SO
thick beijinghua that I barely understand anything she says

It surprises me that I have learned how to say anything at all even half-way close to "correct".

Yeah, I personally don't think there is once correct way to say things. Theres just CCTV anchorman
talk thats considered standard, but I'd say since so many people speak non-standard, really there
isn't one standard.

I was in Taipei last month and when I bought my MRT tickets I found that there was a very common
mistake in the display of the ticket vending machine. I then wrote an email to the MRT about this,
but I never got a reply. I guess, unlike in HK where public companies usually have performance
pledge which covers a timeframe for reply to letters, the MRT is not used to replying to such
letters. But considering the education level of Taiwan people and how obvious the mistake is, I
guess I wasn't the first one who told the MRT about it.

Anyway, here are a photo of the mistake and the email I wrote -

Last year I went to guangdong province and found that many barbershop used this
word:美容美發.And a picture which I saw in a forum showed that a supermarket translate
"一次性用品" to "one sex item".
真是沒有最錯，只有更錯啊~

候: This word is often used in Classical or ancient Chinese? 後 came later to replace it?
發 doesn't mean hair. It's converted back to the Traditional Chinese using the wrong character,
which uses the same character as hair in Simplified Chinese. Try asking Yun-Fat Chow if he has
"soft hair"?

I think skylee is right. The machine didn't inform her to get a ticket later (as jakiestar
suggested), but to wait a little bit.

As for haircut, 发 is used for haircut in simplified characters, but in traditional characters it
is 髪 and not 發. In this point, jakiestar was right.

Ah ok, now I see it. Initially I didn't look at the enlarged image, just the small thumbnail, and
I didn't see that the middle vertical stroke (what becomes the right-hand vertical stroke of 耳)
extends so far. It kind of disappears in the thumbnail.

and the handwriting is not good.

it's a combination of characters. qu[to take: character as a whole]? ren[person: 2 strokes in
middle]? Maybe it's an attempt to duplicate an existing ancient Chinese character into something
fancy[to please someone who's oblivious to the Chinese language]? Badly modified character. Or
maybe the creator is trying to combine different Chinese calligraphic styles into one?

Hi everyone!
My name is Andrew and I live in Sweden.
I am going to be taking the introductory mandarin course at Tsinghua University this coming
semester but there is one problem. I need to get a special form signed by either my teacher or
someone that has the authority to sign these kind of things for foreign students, and I need this
form signed and sent in to the swedish department of education before I leave Sweden.

I've tried calling them but nobody seems to speak any english at all and my mandarin is horrible
(thats why I am taking the introductory course).
I've already tried calling the number I was given in my acceptance letter and the guy there didn't
speak any english at all.

So I am kinda clueless on what to do or where to turn :\

PLEASE HELP!!!

I'm Swedish and very curious about what kind of form it is: does it have to do with getting your
credits counted for a degree or something, or is it for CSN?

It'll be super-easy to fix once you get there: walk into the office for foreign students and
they'll give you all sorts of signatures, red stamps or whatever you could need. How come it is so
urgent?

You can try to let a Chinese person do the call for you. If you mail me, I can help you. I'm not
really sure what sort of paper you are looking for. I am also Swedish and have been studying in
China but I can´t really recall this sort of paper. You do need your acceptance documents to send
to CSN but that is it. Look at it from the bright side, maybe your teacher don´t know any English
either;-) When I where in Beijing at ligong daxue that happened to me. Not fun for the first
couple of month until my Chinese where good enough to understand my teachers. ( yes, I am older so
nowadays they do actually understand English). By the way, you are aware that you need to have
been studying at least one semester Chinese before you can get CSN support for overseas study in
Chinese?( if they haven't changed that recently)

To be honest, very often the staff at the principals office do not speak much english. Teachers
and others on the other hand are usualy fluent in English nowadays.

I didn't type that at first since I'm pretty sure that only people in Sweden knows what that is.

CSN told me they needed this paper signed because otherwise they cannot approve of my studies in
Tsinghua University and then they won't be able to give me my studiebidrag so thats why I would
need this sent in to CSN before I leave.
they told me that it will take at least a month for them to check everything.










ChineseSpeaker -

The guy who answer your phone maybe university officials or working stuff. As I know those guys
can do nothing but speak dialect Chinese. But you don't need to worry for your life in China. Now
there are many people who can speak English, especially in big cites, such as Beijing and Shanghai

Applepie is correct. Since China English education is test-oriented, so many can read English
while can not write English, can speak English but can not listen English.

The guys may be able to speak English, but they can not understand you

I'm also going there this fall, and called them a couple of times. The few people I talked to were
able to speak and understand english. I called asking questions about how to send money for the
deposit - the lady told me not to send cash and to make a wire transfer but never gave me the bank
account info/ switch code number, so i had to google it I don't know if they associated the
deposit with my application, I sent a couple of emails, but didn't get any replies, and about 3
months later I got an acceptance letter!

If you're in "di san" and face the front you can usually use the free wireless from the cafe
across the street. Sit in the communal areas (the places near the lifts with blue chairs) if you
have difficulty from your room.

Annoyingly, you need to be 2 or 3 floors up, so it usually doesn't work in the twelve oaks coffee
bar on the ground floor.

Being multilingual, you surely understand that there are many ways to express something in another
language. All three above mean "avant garde" or "cutting edge." The first is simplified Chinese,
the second is traditional Chinese and the third is Japanese.

If you want a literal translation, it would be ”端に” or ”端っこに” in Japanese, but
please understand this means "on the edge," as in "The cup is on the edge of the table," and
surely does not convey the meaning of the chorus from Aerosmith's hit record.

I think the point here is that in English there are several different meanings of on the edge, and
they would each translate into a different phrase in Chinese depending on which meaning you wanted
translated. It would help if you could clarify, or provide a bit of context about "on the edge",
and that would help others provide you with the most accurate translation. If you're not
interested in accuracy, you might as well get something like "傻瓜“ tattooed and be done with
it.

Nice i have 7 diffrent tattoos to choose!
By saying on the edge i mean:
1) Leaving in danger
2) Being different
3) Behaving in a different way that people do in your culture
4) Not into fashion, expensive clothes and show off

So i am waiting for a clearer answer now and something like this:

You will get some very strange reactions from Chinese people if you go with #6.

The tatoo on the hairy guy says "husband" or "worker."

That's my first tattoo and when i got that tattoo they told me that it was an F since my name is
Filios! My god, these tattoo guys are so stupid some times!
Ok i will be a husband one day and i am a hard worker! That's good for me!
So what about my quote: ""ON THE EDGE""
How would it be written in chinese traditional, simplified and in japanese?!
